House panel approves license plate for New Orleans Saints fans

BATON ROUGE — Design of a license plate that will allow New Orleans Saints fans to show pride in their Super Bowl championship team cleared its first legislative hurdle today and now goes to the full House for debate.

The House Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works gave unanimous approval to House Bill 1165 by Rep. Jeff Arnold, D-Algiers, that creates the tag, to be designed in conjuction with the team.

The tag that will cost drivers a premium fee of $25 a year, a $3.50 administrative fee for the Office of Motor Vehicles and the regular cost of a tag which is based on the value of the  vehicle.

The $25 annual fee, Arnold said, will be rebated to the parishes where the tags are bought with the revenues donated to recreational programs.

Randy Haynie, a lobbyist for the Saints, told the panel that the bill has the approval of the  team and the National Football League.
