Who Dat say dey gonn’ take away our chant and pride?
No-one now…but with restrictions.
As the New Orleans Saints prepare for their first ever trip to the Super Bowl, the NFL slapped down some cease and desist orders on local businesses. A lawsuit was filed to try those business to stop selling merchandise, including t-shirts, that have the colors and trademarks of the Saints along with the words “Who Dat” on it.
NFL spokespeople advised that the “Who Dat” phrase belonged to the NFL and those selling the merchandise were infringing on their trademarks.
Well, a small bit of a settlement has come about and it is a point for local retailers. Ok, so maybe half a point.
The NFL backed off a bit on Friday and now advises that they don’t own the fleur-de-lis or famous chant of the Saints, but will only challenge sales “when those products contained or are advertised using other trademarks or identifiers of the Saints.”
Saints head coach Sean Payton today was asked to weigh in on the controversy over who can print “Who Dat.” The coach indicated he’s on the side of the businesses that sell “Who Dat”-emblazoned merchandise.
“The people who are running these small businesses, we’re fans of those people,” said Payton. “I don’t think anyone can own ‘Who Dat.'”
A fantastically edited video that will pump up the Who Dat Nation. By Who Dat Nation we mean the FANS not some large faceless billion dollar corporate bully.
Count the National Football League among the growing members of Who Dat Nation. After all, they own the phrase — or so they say in cease and desist letters sent out to at least two local T-shirt retailers earlier this month.
In letters sent to Fleurty Girl and Storyville, the NFL ordered the retailers to stop selling a host of merchandise that it says violates state and federal trademarks held by the New Orleans Saints.
Among the long list of things the NFL says is off-limits without a licensing agreement are some obvious violations like the official logo of the Saints and the team’s name. But the one that stands out is “Who Dat.”
Win or lose, the city will honor the New Orleans Saints‘ Super Bowl run with a parade the Tuesday after the big game.
The Super Bowl is Feb. 7. The parade will be Feb. 9 in New Orleans.
The exact time and route have not been determined, but Mardi Gras organizer Barry Kern is working with Mayor Ray Nagin’s office to coordinate the event.
Remember Who Dat Nation – Lil Wayne SOLD us out. Weezy turned his back on New Orleans, his home town. He turned his back on the Saints. My friends and I have made a commitment to never spend a dime on him again.
This is from Master P:
“As a young child growing up in New Orleans, I always wanted to see the Saints go to the Super Bowl,” said P. “I’ve always worn black and gold colors as No Limit Jerseys and always represented for the New Orleans Saints by wearing their caps and jerseys. The comment Lil Wayne made about New Orleans Saints losing to the Minnesota Vikings, made no sense to me as a New Orleans native. This is our hope as a city after surviving Hurricane Katrina. This team should bring us together as people. I understand that he has the right to have his own opinion and comment or even root for another team if he wants to.
It’s just disappointing to hear this coming from a brother who was born and raised in New Orleans, made money off his music representing the city of New Orleans, talking about it in his lyrics. I’m from Uptown New Orleans and I don’t care who the Saints play against, how good the opposing team is, nor what the odds are against them. I would never go against my team, the New Orleans Saints, or root for an opposing team playing against them. We’ve been waiting to get to the Super Bowl for 40 years and if we do, we will celebrate in Second Line.
Technology is amazing. There are dozens homemade videos from Who Dats in the Dome for Saints winning kick in overtime. They are all awesome to watch and give me goosebumps. What they all have in common is the crowd noise and everyone hugging each other. Old, young, black, white – all members of the Who Dat Nation.
