New Orleans — A league source indicated Monday that the New Orleans Saints aren’t planning to use the franchise tag on free agent safety Darren Sharper. But General Manager Mickey Loomis has given no indication yet what his intentions are.

The deadline for designating franchise and transition players is Thursday. The Saints would have to offer Sharper, 34, a one-year deal worth $6.455 million to lock him up. Or they could decide to skip the franchise tag and negotiate a new deal with him or let him leave for another team in free agency.

New Orleans Saints’ Tracy Porter says he was pointing to the Who Dats during Super Bowl interception

By Terri Troncale, The Times-Picayune

February 22, 2010, 5:42AM

A fan asked New Orleans Saints Super Bowl XLIV hero Tracy Porter Thursday if there was special meaning in the way he gestured as he ran toward the end zone after picking off Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

“After the interception, you pointed in the air 3 times with each hand. What is the significance of this really cool jesture? Was it preplanned or spontaneous?” the guy asked during a midday chat on ESPN.com.

It was spontaneous, No. 22 said. “I was pointing to the Who Dat nation in the crowd. When I was running down there I saw them jumping and shouting, so I wanted to give them a shoutout.”

UTICA —

Will Smith, a New Orleans Saints defensive end and Thomas R. Proctor High School graduate, continues to gain accolades around the region.

Smith, whose team won the recent Super Bowl over the Indianapolis Colts, was honored with a resolution at Wednesday’s Common Council meeting for his athletic feats and contributions to the Mohawk Valley.

“Having a local resident reach to the level that Will Smith has done and in such an exemplary way, he’s certainly a role model for all of our citizens,” said Councilman Frank Vescera, D-1, who sponsored the resolution.

Smith went on from Proctor to Ohio State University, where he was a three-year starter and won a national championship as a junior.

As a Saint, he was named to the Pro Bowl in 2006 and had a career-high in sacks this year with 13, good for fifth in the league.

The resolution also mentions Smith’s various activities around the region, including hosting the “Evening of All-Stars” awards banquet honoring the O-D’s All-Mohawk Valley Football Team and holding the Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way Foundation’s punt, pass and kick competition and skills camp.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Councilman Jerry Kraus, D-at large, said the council should invite Smith to a meeting the next time he’s in town to congratulate him personally.
