The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a seven-year, $56.7 million extension with All-Pro guard Jahri Evans, according to a league source — the richest deal for an interior offensive lineman in NFL history.

Not bad for a former fourth-round draft pick out of Division II Bloomsburg.

Evans, 26, has steadily earned a reputation as the best young guard in the league over his four-year career, during which he has started every game since Week 1 of his rookie season.

By The Times-Picayune

May 04, 2010, 4:47PM

The New Orleans Saints have claimed running back P.J. Hill off of waivers from the Washington Redskins, General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Tuesday.

Hill, 5 feet 10, 218 pounds, is a second-year player who was signed by the Saints as a rookie free agent out of Wisconsin after the 2009 draft. He carried 26 times for 128 yards with a team-leading three touchdowns in the preseason.

He spent the first six weeks of the regular season on the Saints’ practice squad, before being signed to the active roster of the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent seven weeks. After a short, late-season stint on the Eagles’ practice squad, Hill was signed to the Redskins active roster for their season finale.

The past few months for the Saints and the veteran safety have been nothing but posturing. Despite a flurry of recent talk about the 34-year-old free agent landing in Jacksonville or somewhere else, the Saints announced Monday that Sharper will return to New Orleans.

“We have said since the end of the season that we would love to have Darren back in a Saints uniform for 2010 and I’m glad we’ve been able to make that happen,” general manager Mickey Loomis said. “Darren was an integral part of our Super Bowl-winning team and we look forward to having him back.”

New Orleans Saints OT Charles Brown may have fallen in draft for medical reasons

By James Varney, The Times-Picayune

April 29, 2010, 3:15PM

When the NFL draft began last week, Southern Cal offensive lineman Charles Brown was on most mock draft boards as a first round pick. But his name wasn’t called that Thursday night – the league’s first prime time draft event – and almost wasn’t called the second night, either.

With the final pick of the second round last Friday – and the 64th pick overall – the Saints selected Brown. It was, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis noted, a no-brainer given that Brown was universally graded a much higher player.

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

April 25, 2010, 6:24AM

With another NFL draft in the bag, it’s safe to predict this about the 2010 New Orleans Saints: More shootouts are on the way.

The Saints didn’t get much help for their defense during the three-day player lottery. In fact, they added more players to their top-ranked offense than they did to their 25th-ranked defense.

And the two defensive players they drafted, cornerback Patrick Robinson and defensive tackle Al Woods, aren’t expected to be immediate difference-makers. It’ll be an upset if either cracks the starting lineup this season. And neither is going to help the Saints’ most glaring defensive weakness: a tepid pass rush.
