Some New Orleans Saints roster spots hinge on health as well as performance

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

Oakland, Calif. – Timing is everything.

A week ago, dynamic rookie wide receiver Joe Morgan had practically forced his way onto the Saints’ 53-man roster with his breakout performance in practices and preseason games. Now his status is more in doubt because of a knee injury that could sideline him for a month.

Earlier this month, the defensive tackle spot was one of the deepest on the Saints’ roster. Now the Saints might have to carry a fifth tackle into the opener just to have enough healthy players ready for the Green Bay Packers.

New Orleans Saints could benefit from a statement victory against Oakland

By Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

Oakland, Calif. – You might recall the last time the New Orleans Saints played at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

It was Week 3 of the 2009 preseason, and the 45-7 rout of the Raiders served notice of special things to come.

They say exhibition games are meaningless, but with the benefit of hindsight, there was plenty of meaning in the Saints’ dominant performance that night. The Saints scored touchdowns on their first three drives and the defense forced and recovered three fumbles.

Sproles grateful for new start with Saints

Greg Beacham, The Associated Press
OXNARD, Calif. – When the New Orleans Saints’ defence stayed on top of Darren Sproles a bit too long during a practice drill on Thursday, most of the offence jumped in to rescue the new running back, setting off a brief scuffle on an otherwise peaceful California afternoon. Safety Malcolm Jenkins even grabbed hold of tight end Jimmy Graham’s facemask before everybody calmed down.

The Saints have a clear interest in keeping the durable Sproles healthy. They’re counting on the undersized speedster to help carry them past the departure of Reggie Bush and on to bigger achievements – and that’s exactly why Sproles chose the Saints in free agency.

Saints going slow with rookies

By Pat Yasinskas

Aside from running back Mark Ingram, we haven’t heard a lot about or seen much of New Orleans’ rookie class. That apparently is about to change a bit.

Coach Sean Payton said he’s seen some good things in practice from third-round pick Martez Wilson. With the Saints having some injuries at linebacker, Payton said Wilson likely will get a lot of snaps on the strong side in Sunday’s preseason game with Oakland.

“For him, it’s the every-down discipline with assignment and technique,’’ Payton said.

There’s fierce competition to be the New Orleans Saints outside linebackers

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

Oxnard, Calif. — Don’t bother trying to sort out the Saints’ pecking order at outside linebacker. They haven’t even sorted it out yet.

Rookie Martez Wilson might be the latest guy to get an extended look at the starting strongside linebacker job Sunday night at Oakland. And the Saints plan to “cross-train” veterans Scott Shanle, Will Herring and Jonathan Casillas over the next week. Shanle has already been taking snaps at the position this week, and Herring and Casillas likely will flip-flop during practices next week.

Expectations rise for New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune
