After Further Review: Five takes from Saints win over Bears

By Sean Fazende

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Take One: Imperfect, yet significant win

Sunday’s win over Chicago wasn’t perfect. Fortunately for the Saints though, it didn’t have to be.

The Saints faced a rookie quarterback making his third start, created five takeaways, committed just one penalty at home and yet somehow narrowly escaped with a seven-point win.

The pessimist would say that’s hardly a cause for celebration. The optimist may say wins in the NFL are hard and getting the victory is all that matters.

The realist would say, who cares? Both sides are accurate.  But the bottom line is  the Saints are 5-4 at the midway point of this 2023 NFL season and hold sole possession of first place of the NFC South.

Derek Carr rebounds from a tough week as the Saints beat the Colts 38-27

INDIANAPOLIS — — Derek Carr spent the past week answering questions about his sideline demeanor.

New Orleans’ quarterback had nothing to apologize for Sunday.

Carr masterfully carved up Indianapolis’ young, depleted secondary, Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara scored two touchdowns apiece, and the Saints beat the Colts 38-27 to move into a share of the NFC South lead.

New Orleans (4-4) ended a two-game skid, and Carr got a chance to move past the criticism he took for scolding teammates and yelling at offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael during a Week 7 loss to Jacksonville.

Saints QB Derek Carr explains why he was seen shouting at Pete Carmichael on the sideline

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr admitted that he was “livid” after his team’s 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans, and video on social media showed him shouting as he came to the sideline late in the game following a failed drive.

The footage shows Carr angrily yelling as he interacts with offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, but it doesn’t necessarily show him directing the anger at Carmichael.

On Monday, Carr explained what was taking place during the heated moment.

“I apologized to Pete on the airplane. I was talking to Pete, but I wasn’t talking about Pete,” Carr said. “Pete and I know exactly what I was talking about, and why. When the game is on the line, that’s when you have to be on every detail of your assignment. I was a little upset at some of those things. it had nothing to do with Pete. He just happened to be the one that walked up when I was a little angry.”

Stroud throws 2 TD passes, defense makes late stops to lead Texans over Saints 20-13

HOUSTON — — After failing to get a late stop in a loss to the Falcons last week, the Houston Texans got two in the last five minutes on Sunday to secure a victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Rookie C.J. Stroud threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns and the defense did the rest as the Texans held on for the 20-13 win.

“When the game was on the line and we needed it most, guys stepped up,” Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said. “It’s tough to win in this league, but it was awesome to see the way our guys grinded it out and the way they stepped up right there in the end.”

The victory matches Houston’s win total from last season when the team finished 3-13-1.
