Saints, Colts strong in New York Life Protection Index, but dreams of Super Bowl return end early

NORTHBROOK, Ill. (STATS) – The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts did an excellent job protecting their respective Pro Bowl quarterbacks this season.

Ultimately, though, giving Drew Brees and Peyton Manning time to throw wasn’t enough.

New Orleans and Indianapolis graded out well once again in the New York Life Protection Index on wild-card weekend, but both teams saw their hopes of a return to the Super Bowl slip away.

Pierre Thomas has no hard feelings with the New Orleans Saints as he looks to future

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints tailback Pierre Thomas described his injury-plagued season as a roller-coaster ride. But the pending free agent said Tuesday that won’t keep him from returning to New Orleans in 2011 if he and the Saints can work out a deal.

Thomas’ season was marred by a lingering ankle injury and conflicting diagnoses from various doctors. Though Thomas said he doesn’t blame anyone for the way his injury was handled, he said if he could go back in time, he would have rested the ankle for longer after injuring it in Week 3.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees would like to reach long-term contract extension with Saints this offseason

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees made it clear Tuesday that he’d like to reach a long-term contract extension with the Saints this offseason, though he didn’t exactly make any demands.

“I think every player’s always looking for an extension aren’t they? That goes for you guys too,” Brees said to a group of reporters. “I’ve got one year left (on his current contract). And discussions have been ongoing. So we’ll see how it plays out.”

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees says Saints aren’t a ‘one-shot wonder’

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees still believes his team is in its prime and that the Saints have a chance to do great things.

But he said this season proved that it’s never easy.

“I think clearly we are not a one-shot wonder,” Brees said when the phrase was presented to him in a question Tuesday. “We’ve been able to sustain a pretty high level of performance over the last five years. I believe we have the most wins in the NFC in the last five years.

New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush hopes to stay with team, but acknowledges uncertain future

By James Varney, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush, scheduled to make more than $11 million in 2011 under the final year of his contract, said he hopes to remain a Saint but understands there is considerable uncertainty around his future.

Not all of that is strictly individual, of course, because the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players’ union is set to expire March 4 and both sides appear poised for hardball negotiations that could delay the start of next season or lead to a lockout by the owners. But that all means Bush’s personal situation is very cloudy.

Saints keeping eye on Denver situation

By Pat Yasinskashttp://www.whodatnation.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpNew Orleans fans might want to keep a very close eye on what happens with the head-coaching situation in Denver. There’s a very good chance someone who does not get that job will be running the Saints’ defense next season.

As expected, Denver requested permission Monday to interview New Orleans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Coach Sean Payton said permission was granted and Williams will interview sometime this week. The Broncos couldn’t seek permission to interview Williams until the Saints’ season was over and that came with Saturday’s loss to Seattle.

If Williams gets the Denver job, one possible candidate to replace him in New Orleans would be John Fox, who also is scheduled to interview for the Denver job Wednesday. Fox spent the last nine seasons coaching the Carolina Panthers and he and Payton are close friends dating back to the days when they both were assistants with the New York Giants.

Pondering Reggie Bush’s future

By Pat Yasinskas

There already is a lot of speculation by fans about Reggie Bush‘s future with the New Orleans Saints. It’s understandable because there is a lot of money involved.

Let’s start with the facts. The 2011 season is the last on Bush’s contract, and he is scheduled to count a whopping $16 million against the salary cap, with $11.8 million coming in base salary. Another $1 million of that figure comes from the prorated renegotiation bonus Bush received when he restructured his contract in 2008.

Denver Broncos request/receive permission to interview Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams

By James Varney, The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is expected to interview with the Denver Broncos soon for their vacant head coaching position.

Saints Coach Sean Payton confirmed Monday the Broncos had faxed a request form to the Saints after New Orleans season ended abruptly with a wild-card playoff loss to Seattle last week. Denver executive John Elway tweeted on Monday that the Broncos will interview Williams on Wednesday.
